Double a pitch and you get the same note an octave up. Double A 440 Hz forty times and you get 484 THz — an electromagnetic frequency whose wavelength is 620 nm: orange light. This instrument listens to your song, shifts every frequency into the visible band, and shows you the result — as light, and as the standing-wave geometry a plate of sand would form.

Play something — every note that sounds appears here with its own wavelength, and the swatch above mixes them additively, the way light combines.
Honesty clause. Sound is a pressure wave in air; light is an electromagnetic wave. They are different physical phenomena, so a note has no literal “true” color — but the mapping here is not arbitrary either. The visible band spans almost exactly one octave (~400–790 THz), so when each pitch is doubled until it lands inside it, every note name claims one unique hue, and harmony in sound becomes harmony in color. The plate patterns are real physics: standing waves on a center-driven plate — the speaker cone pumps energy in at the middle, waves radiate outward, and sand gathers on the still rings and petals between them, the same way salt behaves on a subwoofer.
